Confession

by

Okay, KfC is somewhat behind in terms of new posts. I will confess:

1. Every four years, I become a football fan for four weeks. I thought that I had read and written enough in advance, but it turns out that I was about two books short.

2. Plus, a highlight of every summer is the Open Championship. Even I can’t read a novel when I know that howling winds at St. Andrews are producing very high scores — and wonderful television.

3. Perhaps most important this year in terms of reading distractions, Mrs. KfC and some friends have been off trekking in the Lake District and I have been sending daily North American news reports. Even better for regular visitors here, however, they have now headed south to Devon and will be spending the next few days in the territory of the blogger of all bloggers, dovegreyreader — DGR and Bookhound met them at the Plymouth train station yesterday. I’m getting regular reports (and photos) so this too is a reading distraction. The good news, however, is that Mrs. KfC has promised a guest post about the experience when she gets home. Stay tuned.

I promise I will be back to regular form in a week or so. The David Mitchell is the book currently being read (and is proving a bit slow). Once I figure out when I’ll be finishing it, I’ll get a schedule up. In the meantime, here’s a picture of a sculpture that we are rather proud to own:

That’s funny, I’m quite distracted this end too and in the nicest possible way:-)

Don’t worry, Kevin, it gives us a chance to catch up on some posts from long ago!
I love the sculpture, and it seems to be in the perfect position in front of the window there.

If Mrs KfC is visiting near West Berkshire, let me know!

The best thing about the world cup is how quiet it is outside when England are playing (unless you walk by a pub). It’s fabulous, you can go to your favourite restaurant on a whim and there will be space.

Lisa: That’s an apple tree outside the window — so the background changes as the year goes on. Those are spring blooms in the picture, it is now solid green, but will feature nice red crabapples in a month or so. And then of course there are six months of winter when the bare branches will “echo” the outline of the sculpture. And do check out dovegreyreader’s blog today for the new quilt “window” that is on its way here to be hung right next to this display.

Colette: West Berkshire is not on this itinerary but I am sure it will be sometime in the future and you will definitely be contacted. As for football, I’ll admit that one of the attractions of the World Cup is that it is usually in a time zone which means that all of the action is done by early afternoon our time. The reading “break” has been good for me — I am quite eager to see the Booker longlist and get back into the swing of things. I’m guessing that there will probably be a half dozen that I haven’t read or heard of — which will make for a fun August.

Kevin, I am so behind in blogging also that it’s not funny anymore.

    So, you deserve a break!

Did you think that Spain would win?

Do you play golf a lot in the summer?

    a) I was cheering for Germany. And then shifted to the Netherlands. And have to admit that the best team did win.
    b) I have significant back problems so golf is no longer a sport for me. I do like to watch it and could spend every weekend watching golfers deal with St. Andrews wind. It was a wonderful final round.

Kevin, tell me more about the sculpture – the artist, etc. Is s/he local – do you know them? Do you have more, similar items? I have something of similar material (I think) – a cat sitting on a side chair.

Hi Nancy: The artist is Vic Cicansky, from Saskatchewan — link to his website is http://www.cicansky.ca/ . We own five of his pieces, including three tables and think he is quite wonderful. When you check out the website, look in particular at the way he does fruit.

This particular piece is important to us because Mrs. KfC was instrumental in its creation. She commissioned Vic to do an edition of retirement sculptures for her then employer — that project did not work out but we were stunned a year or two later when this sculpture (based on those working sketches) showed up. We bought it immediately and have loved it ever since.

And I’m even more behind … but love the sculpture. I rather like golf, but the sporting events that always slow me down are two tennis ones, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
