Hi Kevin, I’ve been visiting your blog for a while now but I haven’t commented before. I’m very glad I stumbled across this old post. There’s a beautiful song by The National that references this book’s title, and until now I never knew where the line “We’re the heirs to the glimmering world” came from. Sorry about the late reply (internet problems) and thanks for the kind words. Messiah of Stockholm is a novel that I have heard of, but has certainly attracted less attention than her other books. I would be most interested if you would check back in with comments or a link after you have read it. I intend to read more Ozick — her stories are better known so that is where I will probably head next but I admit in the longer run I am more interested in her novels, simply because I tend to appreciate the form more.

Tony: I won’t get into any Roth-Ozick comparisons — they do write from different perspectives. Having said that, like you, I certainly like her work.

Every thing Cynthia Ozick writes is wonderful. Phillip Roth, eat your heart out. You can only dream about writing as good as Cynthia Ozick. I’ve been a fan of hers for about 25 years.

Kerry: If you do want to start with something shorter, you might want to try The Shawl or Dictation first. Personally, I would recommend saving The Shawl for later -- it is such an outstanding piece of work, that a little prep-reading does set you up for it. Many thanks for the positive comments on this review -- I certainly enjoyed the book and my appreciation for Ozick grows with every volume of hers that I read.

Good review, Kevin. You did a great job of letting us know what kind of book it is, what elements you thought Ms. Ozick did well, and why I should finally read Ozick. Unlike Trevor, I did not have this on my list before your review, now it jumps close to the top. There are so many holes in my personal canon, but this is one I must fill. Thanks for the push.

It’s just standard practice on my part when I have a book already in line for reading, Kevin. I then like to come back and see what I missed and how others responded to it. I had no worries you’d spoil the book .
